Free LinkedIn Premium, route by route: the trial, the programs that still exist, and the ones whose official pages are gone.

Free LinkedIn Premium is real but temporary, and most lists of ways to get it are out of date.

This guide checks every route against the page that should document it: the free trial and its billing rules, the veteran and journalist programs, the student offer, and five popular routes whose official pages now return errors or redirects.

Free LinkedIn Premium: the short answer

Free LinkedIn Premium exists, but only for a limited time and only through a few documented routes. The one most people can use is the free trial. Veterans in approved career training programs and working journalists have programs of their own. There is no documented way to keep Premium free permanently.

Many lists online add more routes: gifts from LinkedIn employees, referral links, student bundles and developer subscriptions. We checked each one against the page that should document it. Several of those pages now return errors or redirects, and the table below says which.

Programs change without notice, so treat the last four rows as gone until you see them on an official page yourself. The first three rows are the routes you can plan around.

How the LinkedIn Premium free trial works

LinkedIn Help describes the free trial as a way to explore Premium features at no cost, with conditions that matter more than the headline. Not every member qualifies, the length is not fixed, and the trial is tied to a card from the first day.

RuleWhat LinkedIn Help says
EligibilityDepends on several factors, including whether you have used a Premium trial before
LengthMay vary based on region or promotional terms; the comparison page says plans may be available free for one month
PaymentA valid credit card is required to start the trial
At the endConverts to a paid plan automatically unless you cancel before it ends
Switching plansNot possible for free during the trial
After cancelingNo new free trial for at least 12 months

How to get LinkedIn Premium for free with the trial

LinkedIn Help documents the redemption path through your settings. The same page is the quickest eligibility check: if no free option appears, the troubleshooting note in LinkedIn Help explains the usual reasons.

  1. Open Settings & Privacy

Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage, then select Settings & Privacy from the dropdown.

  2. Go to Account preferences

Click Account preferences in the left pane and find Subscriptions & payments.

  3. Click Upgrade for Free

Under Subscriptions & payments, click Upgrade for Free, then explore the plans on offer.

  4. Pick the plan you actually need

Choose the plan that fits the job you want done in the trial window, because you cannot switch plans for free later.

  5. Enter a card and confirm

Follow the prompts and enter a credit card. LinkedIn requires one to start the trial.

  6. Set your cancel-by date

Write down the date the trial converts and put a reminder two days before it in your calendar.

Why LinkedIn says you are not eligible

LinkedIn Help gives two reasons in its troubleshooting note: you may have already used a free trial, or you may not meet the current eligibility criteria. It does not publish the full list of criteria, so what your own settings page offers is the only reliable answer.

  • You used a trial recently. After canceling a free trial, LinkedIn says you are not eligible for another one for at least 12 months.
  • You already use a trial. An active or past trial can rule out further free Premium subscriptions.
  • Your region or promotion differs. Eligibility and length vary with regional availability and promotional terms.
  • Your card was declined. LinkedIn Help suggests checking the card details or using another payment method.

Which Premium plan to try for free

The trial covers one plan, and switching during the trial ends the free benefits. LinkedIn Help is explicit: if you switch, your billing cycle begins immediately at the new plan's price, and you cannot switch back and regain the trial. Choose once, on purpose.

The credits and features come from LinkedIn Help's plan comparison. Our LinkedIn Premium guide covers each plan in depth, and the Sales Navigator free trial has rules of its own.

The billing clock: when the free trial ends and you are charged

The trial does not end at midnight on a date you choose. LinkedIn Help says billing, cancellation and renewal dates are based on the date and time the subscription was activated. For U.S. members using English, that is local U.S. time; for other countries or languages, it is Coordinated Universal Time.

MomentWhat happens
Before the endLinkedIn emails a reminder to your primary email address, for subscriptions bought on the desktop site
Trial ends, not canceledThe subscription converts to a paid plan and the next billing cycle is charged
You cancel the trialThe trial ends immediately and Premium access stops right away
You cancel a paid planAccess continues until the end of the current billing cycle

Do not rely on the reminder alone. It goes to your primary email address, which for many people is an old personal inbox they rarely open.

How to cancel the LinkedIn Premium free trial before you are charged

LinkedIn Help says you can request to cancel a subscription, promotion or trial at any time. The steps depend on how you bought Premium: directly from LinkedIn, through the Apple App Store or through Google Play. A trial started on the desktop site is a direct purchase.

For a direct purchase, LinkedIn links straight to a cancellation page from its Help article. For paid plans, it advises canceling at least one day before the next billing date. If you miss the date on a trial, the same article points to LinkedIn's refund policy rather than promising a refund.

When to cancel: the timing people get wrong

Canceling a free trial is not like canceling a paid plan. A paid plan keeps working to the end of the billing cycle. A canceled trial stops at once, and LinkedIn Help adds that ending it early means immediately losing access to Premium features.

So the sensible timing is late, not early. Keep the trial running, decide two days before it converts, and cancel then if you are not keeping it. Canceling on day one to be safe throws away the whole trial and still blocks the next one for at least 12 months.

How to get real value from the free trial window

A trial is short, so decide before it starts what you want to learn from it. For anyone who sells, the question is simple: does Premium produce conversations your free account would not? Everything else is decoration.

  • Fix the profile first. Prospects who open your InMail read your profile before they reply. Our guide on how to create a LinkedIn profile covers what they check.
  • Spend the InMail credits on purpose. Write to a short list of people you cannot reach with a connection request, and track every reply. LinkedIn InMail best practices covers the message.
  • Read who viewed your profile. Profile viewers are warm signals. Our guide to who viewed your LinkedIn profile explains what Premium shows and what it hides.
  • Keep a log. The trial log at the end of this page turns the keep or cancel decision into a count, not a feeling.

Free LinkedIn Premium for veterans

LinkedIn's Social Impact page says it offers eligible U.S. military veterans one year of complimentary LinkedIn Premium. It also says the program is being updated to distribute these 12-month subscriptions in partnership with select nonprofit organizations, and asks veterans to check back for the partner list.

As the page stands, the offer is for U.S. Armed Forces veterans enrolled in an approved career training program who do not have a Premium subscription when they redeem. The terms describe a one-time offer that lasts 12 months, is not transferable, may require proof of eligibility, and ends when the year is over.

The same terms also name spouses of service members or veterans, as determined by LinkedIn. The page mentions SheerID and Onfido for verification, so expect to confirm your status before the code works.

Free LinkedIn Premium for journalists

The LinkedIn for Journalists program gives eligible journalists 12 months of Premium. Its program page says LinkedIn is evolving the program, and that the form is an interest list, not an application. Eligible members are invited to a quarterly training webinar, and the training is required to receive a code.

  • Who qualifies. Reporters, editors, producers, columnists, investigative journalists and freelancers who regularly contribute to verified outlets.
  • Who does not. Marketing, social media, branded content, communications and business development roles, and staff of information services companies.
  • What is required. A verified LinkedIn profile; our LinkedIn verification badge guide covers the options.

The two LinkedIn pages disagree on the plan. The program page says the code is for Premium Business; the pressroom FAQ calls it a Premium Career subscription. Both say 12 months, and the pressroom page adds that renewal is not automatic.

Free LinkedIn Premium for students

In January 2026 Microsoft announced a bundle for college students that included LinkedIn Premium Career. When we checked on Sep 26, 2026, the announcement URL redirected to Microsoft's general student pricing page, and we could not read the offer's terms on an official page.

A student route may still exist through your school. Ask your university's career office what it offers, and redeem only through a page on linkedin.com or your school's own domain. A code shared in a comment thread is not a program.

Routes other guides list that we could not confirm

Most lists of free Premium routes repeat each other. We looked for the official page behind each one. Where that page is gone, the route may still work for someone, but nobody can promise it to you, and a guide that does is repeating an old post.

Coupon codes, shared accounts and other shortcuts

Searches for a LinkedIn Premium coupon code mostly lead to pages that recycle expired offers. LinkedIn's own offers are redeemed from your settings or from a program page on a LinkedIn domain, not from a code a stranger posts.

Be careful with anything that asks for your LinkedIn password to unlock Premium, or sells an account that has it. LinkedIn's veteran terms, for example, say the promotion is not transferable and may not be sold, shared or bartered. If your account gets locked, our LinkedIn account restricted guide covers what happens next.

LinkedIn Learning through your library is free, but it is not Premium

Some lists count library access as free Premium. It is not. LinkedIn Learning for Library is a separate product that patrons log into with a library card and PIN, and it covers LinkedIn Learning courses, not Premium features such as InMail credits or profile insights.

It is still worth knowing, because LinkedIn Help says LinkedIn Learning is not sold as an individual subscription. The plan that most resembles one is Premium Career. If courses are all you want, ask your library before you start a Premium trial.

Premium perks are the reverse: free trials for paying members

Searches for free Premium also surface LinkedIn's partner benefits. These run the other way. LinkedIn Help says Premium perks are available to paying Premium subscribers in select regions, as limited-time free trials or discounts on other services, and cannot be redeemed on iOS devices.

What the free LinkedIn account already covers

Before chasing a free Premium route, check whether you need Premium at all. LinkedIn Help lists what a basic account includes, and for many sellers the basic account plus a good profile does most of the work.

Basic accountNeeds Premium
Find and reconnect with colleagues and classmatesSending InMail to people outside your network
Request and give recommendationsThe full list of who viewed your profile
Search for and view member profilesApplicant insights and business insights
Receive unlimited InMail messagesUnlimited LinkedIn Learning
Save up to three searches with weekly alertsAdvanced search, on some plans

Connection requests with a note are the free account's main outreach tool, and they come with their own limits. Our LinkedIn connection limit guide explains them.

For sellers: Premium, Sales Navigator, or neither

If you sell on LinkedIn, the free Premium question is usually the wrong one. The useful question is which tool produces conversations. Premium adds InMail credits and profile insights; Sales Navigator adds lead lists, alerts and its own interface; a strong free profile adds credibility at no cost.

Use the trial to measure, not to explore. If the InMail credits in your plan produce replies you would not have had otherwise, the plan pays for itself. If they do not, a better connection note will do more than any upgrade. LinkedIn Sales Navigator covers the heavier option.

Checklist before you start a free trial

  • Eligibility checked. Settings & Privacy offers you a free plan.
  • One plan chosen. Picked for a single job, because switching ends the free benefits.
  • Cancel-by date written down. With a calendar reminder two days before.
  • Primary email checked. The reminder goes there.
  • Profile ready. Before the first InMail goes out.
  • Trial log open. Every InMail and reply counted.

Common free LinkedIn Premium mistakes

  • Canceling the trial on the first day, which ends access at once and still blocks a new trial for at least 12 months.
  • Switching plans mid-trial, which starts billing immediately at the new price.
  • Trusting an old list of routes whose official pages now return errors.
  • Entering a LinkedIn password on a site that promises to unlock Premium.
  • Counting library access to LinkedIn Learning as Premium.
  • Letting the trial convert because the reminder went to an unread inbox.
  • Spending the InMail credits on people a connection request would have reached.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get free LinkedIn Premium?

Start the free trial from Settings & Privacy, Account preferences, Upgrade for Free, if your account is eligible. U.S. veterans in approved career training programs and working journalists in editorial roles have 12-month programs. No route documented by LinkedIn keeps Premium free permanently.

Is LinkedIn Premium free for a month?

Often, but not always. LinkedIn Help says trial length may vary by region or promotional terms, and its plan comparison says Premium may be available to try free for one month. Your settings page shows the offer your account actually has.

Why can I not get a LinkedIn Premium free trial?

LinkedIn Help names two reasons: you may have already used a free trial, or you may not meet the current eligibility criteria. After canceling a free trial, you are not eligible for another one for at least 12 months.

Do I need a credit card for the LinkedIn Premium free trial?

Yes. LinkedIn Help says you must enter a valid credit card to start the trial. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the subscription converts to a paid plan and the next billing cycle is charged.

How do I cancel the LinkedIn Premium free trial?

Use the cancellation steps in LinkedIn Help for the way you bought Premium: directly on LinkedIn, through the Apple App Store or through Google Play. A canceled trial ends immediately, so cancel near the end of the trial, not on the first day.

What happens if I cancel LinkedIn Premium free trial early?

The trial ends at once and you lose Premium access right away. LinkedIn Help adds that after canceling a free trial you cannot start another free trial for at least 12 months.

Can I switch Premium plans during the free trial?

Not for free. LinkedIn Help says switching plans during a trial ends the free benefits of the original plan, starts billing immediately at the new plan's price, and cannot be undone to regain the trial.

Is LinkedIn Premium free for students?

Microsoft announced a student bundle with LinkedIn Premium Career in January 2026, but the announcement URL now redirects to a general student pricing page. Ask your university career office, and redeem only on a linkedin.com page or your school's own site.

Is LinkedIn Premium free for veterans?

LinkedIn's Social Impact page offers eligible U.S. veterans one year of complimentary Premium. The program is being moved to select nonprofit partners, and it is for veterans in an approved career training program who have no Premium subscription when they redeem.

Can journalists get LinkedIn Premium for free?

Yes, through LinkedIn for Journalists: 12 months for eligible journalists in editorial roles, after an interest form, a required training webinar and profile verification. The program page calls it Premium Business; the pressroom FAQ calls it Premium Career.

Is there a LinkedIn Premium coupon code?

Not a public one. LinkedIn's own offers are redeemed from your settings or from a program page on a LinkedIn domain. Pages listing codes mostly recycle expired offers, and a site that asks for your LinkedIn password is not a LinkedIn route.

Can a LinkedIn employee give me free Premium?

We could not confirm it. The LinkedIn Help article on employee gifts returned 404 when we checked on Sep 26, 2026, so treat the claim as unverified until you see it on an official LinkedIn page.

Is LinkedIn Learning free with a library card?

Many libraries offer LinkedIn Learning for Library, which patrons log into with a library card and PIN. It covers courses, not Premium features such as InMail credits or profile insights.

Is free LinkedIn Premium worth it for sales?

Only if it produces conversations your free account would not. Use the trial to count InMail replies and useful profile viewers, then decide two days before it converts.
